Herbert W. Marsh & John Hattie. The Journal of Higher Education, 73(5), 603-641 (2002). Authors examine empirically the multiple claims regarding the connection of research and teaching in university faculty.
They collected data from 182 faculty on teaching effectiveness and research productivity, and found that the two are not correlated at all -- positively or negatively. Therefore, they conclude that these activities are separate constructs -- neither complimentary or antagonistic, but independent.
